MAP COO Layla Zaidane recently headlined the 2017 Montgomery County Women’s Legislative Briefing, which engaged organizers, policymakers, and youth leaders in Maryland on women’s issues. Layla spoke on the “The Nuts & Bolts of Creating Change in Your Community” panel, which was moderated by Councilmember Nancy Navarro and also featured Melissa Richmond from Running Star, Matt Celentano from Health Care for All, and Ashlie Bagwell from Harris Jones & Malone, LLC.
The panel focused on ways in which ordinary citizens can best effect change in their communities. In particular, Layla explored methods for building broad and diverse coalitions, as well as the importance of civil discourse. "Grassroots activism should be loud and persistent," she offered, "but also be respectful and constructive."
Women left the panel energized and ready to work with their elected officials on the important change they want to see in their communities - many of them young women now one step closer to running for office themselves!
