Featured Fellow: Tara Maller, The Aspen Institute Franklin Project

James Madison Fellow, Tara Maller, serves as the Associate Director for Strategic Communications at the The Aspen Institute Franklin Project.

The Franklin Project is a growing initiative challenging every young person to do a year of service to improve American citizenship: A tangible answer to the rising trend among Millennials to make a social good impact.

As the organization's website denotes: The Franklin Project envisions a future in which all young Americans are asked, "Where did you serve?" and can answer with pride.

Maller explains that “A dramatic cultural transformation in how our country views national service has the ability to transform both the state of our union and the role we play in the international community in the decades ahead of us. The Franklin Project’s mission is designed to help institutionalize this responsibility and transform the way young Americans — and our nation at large — view national service. Essentially, we aim to make national service a rite of passage for all young Americans."

Maller is a Dartmouth College graduate with a M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago and Ph.D in Political Science from MIT. Her work with the Franklin Project follows a long list of fellowships, causes, and appearances.

As a fellow Millennial, Tara keeps an active presence on social media to connect with her followers.

Her recent appearances with Bloomberg and CNN focus primarily on the deepening political situation in Iraq.

Apart from her work with the Franklin Project, Maller is a research fellow in the National Security Studies Program at the New America Foundation. Her current areas of focus include sanctions, diplomacy, intelligence, cyber security, terrorism and women in security.  She has been published in a wide array of political media, including The Washington Quarterly, ForeignPolicy.com, BlogsofWar.com, Bloomberg View, Al Jazeera America, and The Huffington Post. She’s also made appearances on CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront, Bloomberg West, Bloomberg’s Bottom Line, and HuffPost Live.
