BOSTON (CBS) — Millennials, Stan Rosenberg wants to get you involved in government.
The Massachusetts Senate President said he launched the new Millennial Engagement Initiative to do something about the lack of participation by the millennial generation in the political process.
“The absence of participation by the millennials means that we are not necessarily understanding as we need to what their issues are, what their agenda is that they would like the legislature to focus on,” said Rosenberg.
The initiative involves certain legislators travelling around the Commonwealth to meet with younger voters, and get their perspective on everything from student debt to social media and beyond. Rosenberg added that he hopes millennials will not only help identify problems, but also put forward solutions.
Rosenberg appointed Sen. Eric Lesser of Longmeadow to head of the initiative. At 30, Lesser is the youngest member of the Massachusetts Senate.
“We’re doing it through an open process where we don’t tell young people what the senate should be focusing on,” said Lesser. “We actually go out and we solicit input and we listen to young people and to the millennial generation about what they’re interested in.”
Sen. Lesser plans to hold a number of public meetings around the state.
