MILLENNIAL ACTION PROJECT ANNOUNCES 170% INCREASE IN GEN Z-ERS SERVING IN PUBLIC OFFICE

In 2023, there will be 73 Gen Z state legislators serving; compared to 27 in 2022.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Millennial Action Project announces new data on Gen Z candidates running for public office. The organization found 261 Gen Z candidates who ran for state legislative office in 2022 (age 26 and under). In 2023, there are 73 Gen Z state legislators serving in their state capitals – compared to 27 in 2022. That is a 170% increase in just one year. The partisan breakdown is a near even split. Of the 73, 38 are Republicans and 35 are Democrats.

“We are seeing Gen Zers step up to be problem solvers for the issues that impact their lives the most. Young people are more politically engaged than ever — turning out to vote and getting their friends engaged in advocacy, which creates a positive feedback loop to encourage more young people to run for office,” said Layla Zaidane, President and CEO of Millennial Action Project. “Gen Z candidates bring unique perspectives and experiences to the political arena, having grown up in a world shaped by technology and social media, debates about racial justice and school safety, and the COVID-19 pandemic. They are also the most diverse generation in history and have an opportunity to provide perspectives from underrepresented communities once they step into office. We hope to see more Gen Zers run for office, win office, and hopefully inspire a generation of people to become more civically engaged.”
